Like human healthcare, the vet profession has different tiers.
Mostly, our animals are seen by a primary care veterinarian, similar to a human GP. Some primary care vets also develop special interests and extra qualifications (for example, in dentistry or orthopaedics etc).
‘Specialists’ are veterinarians who’ve undergone advanced training in their chosen discipline, involving several years of additional study, and are Board-certified.
GP veterinarians often recommend and refer their clients to specialists, and some specialists also accept enquiries directly from the public.
